Finding Gratitude & Strength When the Holidays Get Heavy

The holidays are supposed to feel magical… but let’s be honest.
For a lot of us, this time of year comes with stress, pressure, and sometimes that familiar cloud of seasonal heaviness.

Between schedules getting tighter, days getting darker, and expectations piling up, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
But this week, I want to slow things down and talk about two things that can genuinely carry us through the chaos:

Gratitude and perseverance.

These aren’t just words you see on a Pinterest board.
They’re real tools we can lean on when life gets heavy—especially in the winter months.

Why Gratitude Matters (Especially Right Now)

Gratitude doesn’t erase stress or magically make everything perfect.
But what it does do is shift your focus just enough to give your mind some breathing room.

When you intentionally notice something good—even something small—it tells your brain:
“There is still light here.”

It becomes easier to:

  • calm the nervous system
  • regulate emotions
  • stay grounded
  • reconnect with what matters

You don’t need a big journal or a complicated ritual.
Try this simple tool:

The 3–2–1 Holiday Reset

Its the same concept as the grounding method I shared in Mindfulness for the Overthinker: Grounding Practices That Actually Work, but its quicker and keeps you in the holiday spirit.

3 things you’re grateful for today
2 things you handled well
1 small thing you’re looking forward to

It takes less than a minute, and it’s surprisingly powerful.

Perseverance Doesn’t Mean Pushing Yourself to the Limit

This time of year encourages hustle, overspending, saying yes to everything, and trying to be everywhere at once.

But perseverance isn’t about powering through at all costs.
It’s about showing up for yourself, even in small ways.

Some days perseverance is:

  • answering one message you’ve been avoiding
  • washing one sink of dishes
  • taking a 5-minute walk
  • choosing the healthier option
  • saying no without guilt
  • asking for help

It’s not a test of strength.
It’s a practice of consistency.

And you’re allowed to take breaks.
You’re allowed to rest.
You’re allowed to protect your peace.

A Tool for Seasonal Depression & Winter Overwhelm

Winter takes a toll—shorter days, colder mornings, less sunlight, more stress.

Here’s a simple, gentle tool I use:

🔆 The Daily Light Moment

Once a day, get at least 2–10 minutes of natural light.
Outside is best, but even standing by a window works.

Pair it with one grounding question:
“What do I need today to feel like myself again?”

When you do this consistently, it helps:

  • reduce seasonal heaviness
  • improve energy levels
  • regulate mood
  • quiet that mental fog

It’s small but powerful.

Give Yourself Permission to Unwind

The holidays can pull us in every direction.
But you don’t need to earn rest.

Unwinding can look like:

  • putting your phone away for 30 minutes
  • making a warm drink
  • watching a comfort show
  • going for a night drive
  • sitting in silence
  • taking a hot shower
  • reading a few pages

Rest isn’t a luxury.
It’s fuel.
And it’s how we stay centered during a busy season.

If You’re Feeling Heavy, You’re Not Alone

Gratitude, perseverance, and small moments of light won’t solve everything…
but they will help you carry whatever you’re going through with a little more strength and a little more hope.

This holiday season, I hope you:

  • notice the tiny good moments
  • take breaks without guilt
  • choose what feels right for your spirit
  • give yourself grace

You deserve that.

And remember—this is just the beginning of the path within.
